A career path is not like a ladder moving a career in a straight upward direction. In fact, for many it never was. A career process could be seen as more of a Career Hopscotch than a career ladder.
Create a Career Hopscotch
Create a Career Hopscotch using index cards. Make a card for each of the categories below and add your own if desired. Use different card arrangements to see what your career might look like. Ignite your imagination as you think of career possibilities with a fluid career moving through different emphasis on family, career, and education. At any time you might reverse the order as priorities and needs change.
As an example, after completing your basic education, you will probably work and then get further training. A degree, certificate, and training are still important but the added element of gaining real experience while learning is now the norm. In fact, you can often get the best experience through internships and volunteer work while you are in school.

Career Hopscotch Example
My “Career Hopscotch” looks something like this, with the expectation that I will do a reverse hop and repeat some of my previous steps.
The steps may change as I get to the end of the hopscotch, reverse and go back through the many stages of my career. My coaching and writing businesses are the culmination of my career, with education weaving throughout. Seeing your career process as a hopscotch game rather than a career ladder will give you the freedom to pursue many interests during your lifetime. Enjoy the game!

Can you guess what companies are hiring now? It is not hard to think about the services you are using while staying safe at home. You hear about the heroes during this crisis who are keeping us safe, taking care of our health, keeping food on the shelves, and delivering needed supplies. What else does it take to keep our infrastructure humming along and keep us supplied with necessary goods and services? There are a number of companies hiring. You may be asking yourself if you want to work for these companies, would you feel safe working for them, and could you get an interview for a job you really want? It is the perfect time to think about what you want for your future and that of your career.
Two career counselors, Gohar Srapyan and Nancy J. mIller, developed the Success Unlimited Virtual Job Club, with free and low cost paid memberships, to share information and discuss relevant career topics through a private Facebook group, Zoom meeting discussion topics, and Homework Challenges. There is a wealth of information available, often free. I sometimes feel like I am being infobombed. I don’t know about you, but it can give me a big headache, so we are sifting through mountains of great information to share with you what we feel is most relevant.
You may feel like you have gone through the several cycles of grief, more than once already, and not sure what to do next. Take a moment to breathe deeply. Suck in some healthy oxygen. It’s still free and available. You may feel like you are tired of Zoom meetings and don’t want to talk about your current or future state, but there is no better time to join a supportive group who have similar struggles. We talk, you listen, then you can join the discussion if you would like. As the group grows, we will feel more comfortable sharing.
The leaders of virtual job club are introverts. We decided we would stretch ourselves and learn to be more flexible and adaptable in our careers and grow through offering Zoom meetings. Nancy is a Career Counselor, Life Coach, and author who doesn’t love giving presentations to a computer. Gohar is a tech savvy career counselor and teacher who prefers face to face. We hope you will grow with us by joining the Success Unlimited Virtual Job Club and stretch your self-limits.
